7) Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in progression from it to the full product?
The difference between the preliminary task and the main thing is big I do underestimate it very slightly you had to make sure that every little flaw and error was corrected to ensure the near professional look we were aiming for. I feel that the main thing for me was learning to work with a new group of people admittedly when I started I really didn’t know them very well and was pretty nervous about working so closely with them. The preliminary task helped me develop my skills with the camera and made me understand about different shots and how to use then, then the main product allowed me to use all of that be in a very professional way.
During the process of producing the new product I learned a lot about the apple software and how to edit correctly on it, my previous experience meant that I was very amateur with all of this but due to the amount of editing that had to be done we each had our own big chunk to do and many nights after school were spent editing our film opening. I have managed to learn a number of new professional terms, names and meanings towards my work we were pretty lucky in our group to have a parent with professional experience so I learned a lot from him just by talking to him which was a real bonus. My level of confidence has improved a lot when I was producing the prelim task I was very nervous and acted poorly but during the real product I was the main character and was confident and very relaxed.

6) What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
During the creation of pokers advocate I have learned a lot mainly in the areas of the apple software due to previous experience I was already fairly knowledgeable with the equipment but due to being a complete windows guy I was very amateur with the apple software so this project has helped me learn a lot more about how to use the software and the sort of things you can create with it. I have also learned new shot techniques and professional terms for items I would have called standard names so it has made me more professional about my media work. For example double checking everything and instead of leaving things like they are because you like them try to experiment with alternative things such as effects etc.
I have also learned a lot about team work and working as part of a team as the people I was working with I didn’t know very well so it was good to get to know then better and work closely with then and we got on very well I think, as the was no arguments everyone had their own fair share of jobs and responsibilities. I was very amateur about using the equipment and I do feel that during the process of creating the product I have built up the confidence to use the camera and all other equipment professionally and safely.
I have also learned allot about acting and the way to do it professionally granted the is allot of outtakes (as with most filsm!) but it was pretty exciting for me to play the main character of this, and i feel it both helped me build up my confidence but also strenghten the relationship with my fellow peers.

5) How did you attract/ address your audience?
During the creation of pokers advocate we did a lot of very clever editing techniques and decisions to attract our target audience and because I was in charge of a lot of this I know how much time we actually spent in making these changes to ensure a near professional standard. A really big one that took a lot of time was the cuts and transitions between the different shots as the was so many decisions to make towards this mainly speed and type of cut (you under estimate those).Another editing technique we used was effects on our shots to create atmosphere and in some cases tension a great example of when we did this was during the devil scene for when the devil came in we changed the shot to be dark and slowed it down this created a mysterious tense moment for the viewer and that’s exactly what our target audience love as with the type of film.
Another great editing technique we used was via sound effects and music we have managed to get hold of some professional well known songs to go as the background music and then we have in places/ where relevant stuck in some sound effects examples of these effects would be during the angle and devil scene. I think this technique works very well and I know as I have edited most of it, it took a lot of time to get everything in perfect line and on que.
In the opening sequence we attracted our target audience via the titles they were focused on the solid poker terminlogy/ effects that give the viwer a sense of "this poker game/film is serious" and i feel this worked very well.

4) Who would be the audience for your product?
The target audience of our product would be both male and females from the age of 20+ who are into action/ logic based films maybe with a little bit of comedy as well. Demographically the target audience would be English probably from a higher class/ working environment that enjoys logical films and card games.
Even though this is aimed at higher working class type of person I do feel that the price would be slightly lower than a normal film as it’s still an amateur production so we would have to take this into account. The target audience for our product would be the type of person that would be very critical towards our product and offer feedback and evaluation on it I think they would also be a tiny bit biased towards professional productions over amateur like ours.
I think that our film opening would be screened specifically by two social groups rich and educational sector these would be either at home on TV or in classrooms/ lecture theaters.

3) What Kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
My research shows that the sort of film companies our film would be aiming for would be production companies that have done similar card themed action films such as 21 and casino royale, this would be ideal for our product as the target market of person/ target audience is already there and relevant. The same company that distributes 21 would be the perfect company as this is an entire film that’s based around a card game in high stakes and professional standards so I’m certain that the target audience of that company would be perfect for our product.
I do feel that our product has the potential to do well so if it were to be promoted/ distributed by these production companies the price would have to be fairly low as it would be classed as an amateur production not a full blown professional product.
To be specific i would say that Columbia Pictures might distribute our product as they distributed the film ‘21’ which had a heavy influence on our film opening and has a great target audience aimed at card games in specific poker.
I would also say that any independant/ amateur film companys/ festivals may like to get hold of our film opening as that is the right audience and would be geniune people that look for talent in younger film producers.

2) How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Pokers Advocate appeals to a very specific social group I think, I feel that it appeals to both male and females around the age of 20+ they must have an interest in card games and logical plots to a film with a hint of comedy in it. The characters themselves each represent social groups I think Gary is represented in a very camp way we made jokes on set that his nickname should be “Brokeback” and looking back now in reflection it was a correct assumption that we accidently fashioned his character around another character of a very famous gay orientated film Brokeback mountain. So for this I feel that Gary represents the “stereotypical” homosexual male this was a positive thing as it shows that we can relate to the modern stereotypes without making fun or abusing them.
Another character that represents a particular social group is the main character Dave he represents the lower class lazy type of person who is very careless and doesn’t really care about himself.Having been the actor that plays this character I know that we did fashion Dave to be like this, you can see this from the way he dresses and the way he acts. A really good example of this is when the is a shot of Dave at table with his hand on his knee and slouched posture this shows he doesn’t really care despite being in a full professional game of poker he is just relaxed throwing chips about. Dave would represent the lower class type of person who is around middle aged and doesn’t really care much.
The two very key and certainly stereotypical characters we played in pokers advocate were the “angle and devil” as well know the angel is good and the devil is bad, we have by the use of clever editing, body art and clothing have represented and played this stereotypical part very well I think. The devil is dark and mysterious and the angel is light helpful and kind.
I think for all of our social representations we have done pretty well in fashioning the characters and aiming for particular social groups I do feel that you can clearly see how each character is created just by looking at them and you instantly get a feel of what the film is about just from looking at our opening because of this.
Another social group our film opening represents is gamblers they are often shown in allot of varied ways this can be from very rough/ illegal to very professional and smart. In our film opening we decided to go for the more relaxed dressed person but keeping the game table, equipment and rules professional a screenshot to show this would be:

As you can see on the left is "Gary" he is the more experienced professional player of the table and on the right is "Dave" is the more relaxed scruffy stereotype gambler.
A very small part played by "Holly" represents yet another social group in our film opening and that is of course rich/ well of people. Holly's character was formed on the belief that rich people stereotypically wouldn't be a part in underground poker games like this but we wanted to mix up the gambler and rich stereotypes to respresent both in one very small part played by a character. I think this worked very well the character was dressed perfectly wearing items such as dress, glittery scarf, combed hair, and pearl necklace all tell tale signs of wealth.
Screenshot of "Holly":

The most important social group being represented were gamblers as this is a very arguable diversity ie could be positive or could be negative and i think we have represented them fairly in our film opening.

1) In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
During the planning of “Pokers Advocate” I decided to research existing films that have a similar poker/ card game themes to them. Some examples I looked at were Casino Royale and 21. For which by watching clips of and even full movies in the same genre and theme as our film opening I was able to see very clearly the modern media productions features and selling points. Due to the fact that our film was only an opening to a film I was able to extract some of the best features and clever editing techniques of the modern media products. This research provides very useful as having an opening as good as or even better than the modern big successful movies really does challenge the forms and conventions of them.
Another way of challenging the forms and conventions of modern media products is via the modern use of high quality professional equipment, we were very lucky in our group to have access to professional equipment such as red led lights and high quality cameras. As all professionals know that half of every successful modern film or video footage is due to good quality professional equipment and this I think makes our film opening stand out above the rest.
An example of conventions used were that we used a allot of close ups this can be found in the film ‘21’ and upon watching this film for research this proved to be a good use of the camera angle. Another example is the production logos right at the start of the opening for which were designed with the professional logos in mind each with their own unique sound/ jingle to them. Both of these conventions worked well i think the production logos really showed it off to be a professional bit of work and worked well. The use of clever camera angles worked very well too you could clearly see that they were sourced from a professional film/ used in the correct manner. I can give a more direct example of a clever convention used backed up with a screenshot and that is the use of fade, for a few of our shots we decided to use fade as the transition mainly during the angel and devil scene this created real effect and mood to the viewer and worked very well.

Above Screenshot shows off the one of the fades we used well, it was reprasenting the devil come into play with my mind..

Main Character Profiles:
Dave (My Character):
Dave is the main character of the film opening; he is a careless guy that doesn’t have anything left in life. This makes Dave be very careless with his money as he plays we have also shaped Daves character to have a brain tumour which causes him to have sudden out bursts of pain with his head. The characters conscience is shown by the two below characters “Angel and Devil”.
The Angel (Jemmas Character):
Angel: The angel (Jemma) is the more caring of Daves conscience she again doesn’t have a very big part but as the devil goes away we can instantly tell from the way she acts and is clothed.
The Devil (Sonia’s Character):
The devil (Sonia) is fabricated to be a very evil and plotting character though she doesn’t have major big part in the film opening when she comes on you can instantly tell she is evil from the way we have painted body art and dressed her in red.

Final Editing: Production Logos
Well we were given a deadline to be pretty much finished by Friday the 12th of February, so tonight after school me and Sonia stayed behind and edited in the 3 production logos and made sure they all were able to play.
This took us a little longer than expecting as the logos file formats had to be converted so the Apple Mac Imovie software would pick up on the files. But after a few hours of editing we had managed to insert the logos into the start and had messed about with the timings of it all. The only thing left was to move all of the rest of the footage so the voice over and music lined up and then add in music/ sound effects to go with the logos.

We Started Filming!
Well after a couple of weeks of planning we finally started filming last night (21st January 2010)
We filmed the first scene with me (Dave) and Jack (Garry) this scene comprises of showing the tension between us two and how my brain tumour is affecting me.
Overall it went very well and after many takes we finally got loads of footage that can be easily edited and used.

"Action + stupidity = Decent!"
Character briefs
Dave: The “average bloke caught in an interesting situation”. He is stubborn, like “Marty McDown” when called a chicken. He is easily tempted and does not know what to do with life. He is a character to be sympathised and easy to relate to.
Gary: The “cocky-twat”. He and Dave eventually have the last game. He is confident of winning, and has a substantial amount of money. He wears a cowboy hat and open-collared shirt. Most likely has facial hair and does the eyebrow-lift often.
Luke: Little to know about him. Casual wear.
Holly: The “Rich girl with too much time”. She is from a middle/high class family and monitored a lot by parents as a child so rebels as she grows up. She has a lot of money so is not afraid of losing. Wears pearls, dresses, cardigan, and (preferable) has curled hair – obvious “rich girl” look.
Leo: The “Buff-Big man”. Says little, but shows a lot of confident expressions and occasional smirks. Possibly wears shades, gold chains, skin-head, black tank top etc.
